Bubble CRITERIA

-Bubbles would be best reproduced with bubble lettering.

-Letters would need to be on a colored paper to show highlighted edges.

-Color saturation would be strong around edges of letters, and lighter in the middle (value)

-Highlights and colors would need to flow in the direction of the outer contour.

The basics of Bubble Burst style can be found

Glitch

What is a GLITCH?
a sudden, usually temporary malfunction or irregularity of equipment.

Glitch CRITERIA
-Digital malfunciton would be best reproduced with block lettering
-One or more horizontal strips of the block lettering would need to shift  to the left of right.
-Magenta/Red and Cyan/Blue would be on opposing sides of letters.

Neon Sign

In the signage industry, neon signs are electric signs lighted by long luminous gas-discharge tubes that contain rarefied neon or other gases.

NEON SIGN CRITERIA

-Use Mid tone to Dark paper

-Lettering can be connected and thin (like a tube). The tube bends, so it cannot be sharp on the edges.

-The center of tube is the lightest area (white)

-The outside of tube is more saturated in the color.

-Around the tube (on background) is a light glow of the color (use value) .

Metallic Mylar Balloons

This is the MOST CHALLENGING!!

METALIC BALLOON CRITERIA

-scrunch lines on the inside/bends of letter (angling inward)

-usually highlight in center/top of letters.

-usually shadows at bottoms of letters.

(this will change depending on the lighting and perspective).

-has 3-4 tints/shades of balloon color

(example- a sliver balloon would have white, greys, and black)

Surreal Sunset Silhouette

ARTIST FOCUS
Vincent Van Gogh, Starry Night
This painting became famous for its swirling sky.
It was painted by the famous Impressionist artist, Vincent VanGogh. Here he gives his own unique impression of the stars at night behind the silhouette of an Italian Cypress tree.
This display of stars, clouds and the moon are imaginative, rather than real. VanGogh painted it through the window bars of a mental hospital where he creatively escaped reality to help his sanity.

Sometimes the sky can seem surreal.

What is SURREALISM?
An art movement using an irrational a juxtaposition of images. It looks realistic, but something like a bizarre dream that could never happen.

WHAT IS A SILHOUETTE
How does a horizon line effect a silhouette?
What disappears in a silhouette?

What is a LANDSCAPE
Basically an outdoor scene including a horizon line that divides the earth from the sky.

Let’s put all three together…
First,
Plan out different ideas for your SILHOUETTE.
Student Art
High School 9-11th grade

Steps
1. With pencil first, lightly Draw your idea for you silhouette low on the paint paper.
2. Outline with permament black marker (do NOT fill in ).

3. Begin to paint your Surreal Sunrise.
Paint directly over your silhouettes. The BLACK paint will go over it.

Focus on abstract colors, swirls, and blobby shapes, or drips.
-See images below for ideas.

Art 2 Students painting their Surreal Skies

Try to make your sky colors swirl and contour together.

Think Woodgrain pattern or Topographical Maps..

4. When you are done with colors, fill in your silhouette with black paint last.
DO NOT make it too THICK! Remember, watercolor paint uses WATER.
If you make it too thick, it will be shiny and sticky.
If you really want it dark, use a Crayola Black Marker to fill in instead, .

Look Familiar?
I have done this with Middle Schoolers.
